After passing through our hands and our labs, it’s time to deliver the video test of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple’s latest flagship. A versatile smartphone, which will meet all your requests and desires.

Like every month of September, Apple reveals and puts on sale its latest vintage iPhone. This year, the 14 series takes place and its ultimate model is none other than the iPhone 14 Pro Max which, like last year, is available in a strictly identical Pro version (except in size).

Two smartphones that are among the best on the market. A bright screen, monstrous battery life, top-notch performance thanks to the Apple A16 Bionic or even a 48-megapixel main module that delivers excellent results… In short, you’ll understand that this 14 Pro Max won’t disappoint. nobody. The other novelty that is the Dynamic Island is still a bit of a gimmick, but it’s up to third-party developers to make the most of it. In the end, we have here a mature iPhone, which will suit everyone’s needs, as long as you are able to obtain it.

Presentation

The years go by and the iPhones look alike, but not this time. The iPhone 14 Pro Max obviously follows in the footsteps of the iPhone 13 Pro Max, not without bringing its share of new features. The most striking are the arrival of a 48 megapixel module and the abandonment of the notch. Because yes, the Pro models adopt in 2022 the Dynamic Island, a pill that houses Face ID, but not only. This is a slight revival for a smartphone that never does too much.

Ergonomics and design

As of 2020, iPhones look the same stylistically. Unsurprisingly, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is quite similar to the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which already borrowed a lot from… the iPhone 12 Pro Max (you follow?). With each iteration, the differences are quite subtle and reside mainly in the size of the photo island, which grows from year to year, as well as the color: two blues for the 12 and 13 models and a deep purple for the 14. But for its latest flagship, Apple adds a differentiating element, the famous Dynamic Island.

Apple has found a way to remove the notch present since the iPhone X, without removing Face ID, the house facial unlocking solution. We discover a pill accompanied by a punch that houses the front module. This new system is more discreet than the old notch and, above all, it is smaller. The company indicates a reduction of around 30%. But then, why give a name to a notch that is just offset a little lower on the screen?

Well, simply because it’s not a notch. The Dynamic Island functions as an on-screen overlay and displays certain app-related information when the user is not on it. For example, if you are listening to music and exiting the app (Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music to name a few), the Dynamic Island will display the track currently playing. With a long press on this new island, you will expand it to display a map containing more information about the song.

Audio

Since the iPhone 7, Apple has signed the death warrant of the 3.5 mm mini-jack on its terminals. It is therefore not surprising not to see one here. To listen to music, you will need EarPods (Lightning headphones) or wireless headphones.

The stereo sound is always of such good quality, allowing comfortable listening even at very high volume. It’s always good to take in an environment where you don’t always want to wear headphones, at home for example.

Screen

The 14 Pro Max model retains a 6.7-inch Oled panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate (ProMotion technology integrated into iPhone Pros since 2021). The definition of the display changes somewhat and goes to 2796 x 1290 pixels, a slight gain that we owe once again to the Dynamic Island.

The screen part is generally not a surprise at Apple and its calibration is always as good year after year, if not almost identical. A good thing since with the Californian giant, it is impossible to modify this parameter as can be the case with many Android players.

We noted a color temperature of 6817 K, very close to our reference value located at 6500 K. The delta E is one of the lowest we have been able to measure on a smartphone panel. The iPhone 14 Pro Max clocks in at 0.9, with only the green and red tones exceeding a delta E of 2. The rest of the color range remains below a delta of 1, which is excellent.

Performances

If the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus do not inherit the latest chip from Apple, this is not the case with the Pro models. The 14 Pro Max tested here therefore embeds the in-house A16 Bionic SoC coupled with 6 GB of RAM. This processor engraved in 4 nm is a first for the Californian firm.

The speech is the same every year: by perfectly mastering the design from A to Z, Apple manages to deliver the most powerful chip on the market, capable of everything and without flinching. A capacity that the smartphone will retain for at least five to six years thanks to the software optimization of which the company has the secret and which allows it to adapt its OS to a large fleet of smartphones. As you will have understood, the Apple A16 Bionic is powerful, but the gain compared to the previous generation is not as huge as one might think.

In game, the behavior is still excellent. All apps will run smoothly, even the most demanding ones, especially the open-world RPGs that abound on the App Store ( Genshin Impact and Tower of Fantasy to name but a few).

Like what we are used to explaining for Android smartphones, the change in definition on the wide-angle module is accompanied this year by the arrival of pixel-binning on the iPhone. This means that by default, the smartphone will shoot in 12 Mpx, but it is possible to reach full definition to obtain better image quality. We have detailed this process in detail in an article dedicated to the 48 Mpx ProRAW mode.

Apple is changing its formula this year and abandoning its 12-megapixel wide-angle module to go to 48 Mpx. The optics opens at f / 1.8 with a 24 mm equivalence, but above all smaller pixels of 1.22 μm. It is always accompanied by a 12 Mpx ultra wide-angle (f / 2.2) and a 12 Mpx 3x telephoto lens as well. As in 2021, the ultra-wide-angle doubles as a macro lens, but has been enhanced on the 14 Pro models, allowing you to get even closer to a subject in greater detail.
